USA trip- June 2014

Had an awesome time in the USA for two weeks seeing some great herds and finding some seriously good breeding bulls.
Herds that we visited included SAV Connealys Baldridge Rishels Select Sires and Accelerated Genetics.  A highlight was seeing progeny and the dam of JMB Traction 292.  He is an outcross sire with tremendous figures and his progeny look outstanding.
Thanks to all our hosts for their wonderful hospitality as well as Genetics Australia for setting it up.

Autumn Shows- May 2013

Waitara has done pretty well over the past month or so around the local shows.  At Nyngan Show Waitara HP Veronica F12 took out the Supreme Exhibit, and we also acheived Champion Grassfed Bull.  At Dubbo Show the same cow won Grand Champion Angus Female.  Waitara had a great day winning Junior Champion bull, Reserve Senior Champion bull, Reserve Junior Champion female, Breeders Group and Most Successful Angus Exhibitor.  Warren Show netted a similar lineup of prizes.  It is great to get to these local shows, as it is important to support the beef sections and keep the events running.  Also great fun to have a little healthy local competition.

2013 Angus Youth National Roundup- January 2013

On 17th to 20th of January 206 kids travelled to Dubbo to compete at the 2013 Roundup.  This was the first time the event had been held in Dubbo and it was a resounding success with record entries.  Waitara took a team of cattle, and had a range of kids in our group from complete novices to seasoned competitors.  The Waitara team did really well overall, taking home a swag of ribbons.  Every animal received a ribbon in the cattle judging, including Grand Champion Bull, two firsts, 3 seconds, and two third places.  We're really proud of the kids, and thanks to the organising committee for putting together such a great show.  We hope the 'new recruits' from Tottenham enjoyed their weekend and we'd love for them to continue in the fun sport of heifer shows!

USA GENETICS TOUR 2012- July 2012

In June 2012 I visited the US as part of a tour led by Nigel Semmens (our fearless leader) of Genetics Australia.

We visited a number of AI centres including Hawkeye West, Origen , World West, Rocky Mountain and Select Sires. We were able to see many of the world’s top AI bulls.  We also visit many of the USA’s leading registered operations, including SITZ, SAV, Vermillion, Sinclairs and VDAR.

Angus seedstock producers can learn a lot from visiting the USA, where they register nearly six times as many calves as we do and from where almost all of our genetics is derived.

It is also important to go and see the bulls we are using and not rely on hearsay and rumours which can often twist the truth in order to fit an agenda. Where I think the Americans have the edge on us is in understanding the need for an efficient cow herd. They seek cows that are moderate in size but work hard raising a heavy calf as well as getting in calf every year whilst maintaining body condition.

One of the highlights of the trip for me was seeing the large number of great Connealy Consensus sons across the country. Consensus is a bull that we saw baby calves by in 2010 and they were very exciting then. Consensus is one the few bulls that can truly blend performance and phenotype.

It was also exciting to see the 2yr old SAV Pioneer daughters in production.  They are very impressive cows with great udders and sappy calves- the stand out sire group at SAV. I am impatient to see if this will be the case with our own Pioneer daughters who are due to calve in August.

CONGRATULATIONS JAZZY- April 2012

We would like to send a big congratulations to Jasmine Nixon from Crookwell, who was crowned the 2012 Sydney Royal Showgirl.

Jazzy is a passionate leader of her peers in beef cattle breeding and agriculture in general.  She will be a fantastic ambassador for agriculture, and is a perfect choice for encouraging today's youth to choose the agricultural career path.

Waitara Angus was one of the cattle studs Jazzy worked for when she was at school, developing her passion for showing cattle.  We wish her all the best for the year ahead in her role as Showgirl, and congratulate her again on such a massive achievement.
